Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that he has been taught the hard way just what size job he has to do at Anfield following the club’s 3-1 League Cup defeat at home to Swansea City last night.

Rodgers played a number of fringe players against his former club, but the Reds team still included a raft of familiar names, such as Uruguay international Sebastian Coates, veteran defender Jamie Carragher, England internationals Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole and Wales international Joe Allen, while Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard were both introduced at half time.

Liverpool though still lost, crashing out of a competition which they won last season.

For Rodgers, there could be no complaints, with his old club clearly the better side on the night and deserving of winning the game.

"I thought the best team won here", he admitted to his club’s official site.

"In the first half we were too slow and it just wasn’t what I would want or expect from my team. It was a difficult night for us.

relatedNewsStory"Swansea were bright and creative. They took their chances very well. It was disappointing to lose and to be out of the competition but I don’t think we can have any complaints."

And the Northern Irishman believes that the performance has yet again shown him the size of the task he has in turning around Liverpool’s fortunes, which he hinted may even be bigger than he thought, with Swansea giving him a lesson in the job that there is to do at Anfield.

"I know the size of the job here and tonight has been another lesson for me, in terms of where we are at", he said.

"It’s obviously disappointing but when the other team is better than you, you have to acknowledge that and move on."

Liverpool will now try to instantly bounce back at the weekend when they face Newcastle United at Anfield.
