Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has revealed that he came close to buying Liverpool, but his Russian partner in the deal backed out.
Romanov has become a controversial figure in British football for his ownership of Scottish Premier League side Hearts, but he could have had an even higher profile in the country’s game had he succeeded in taking the reins at Anfield.
Romanov insists he could have used the chance to bring Lithuanian players to one of the biggest clubs in Europe, though in the end the deal did not come about, with the scale of the task proving too daunting for Hearts supremo to contemplate on his own when his partner got cold feet.
And the businessman, who pointed out the Reds’ asking price quickly tripled, explained to Russian daily Izvestia exactly what happened during those exciting days when he had the chance to assume control at Anfield.
"There was an opportunity to buy Liverpool", said Romanov.
"That would have been a great chance for Lithuanian players!", he added.

"I wanted to do it with partners, but my Russian partner pulled out at the last minute.
"The price was £200M and quite soon it tripled.
"I narrowly missed out on it. I was already hated in Scotland and I chose not to buy Liverpool by myself."
