Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Brad Friedel has slammed his own team after they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home against Wigan Athletic.

The match at White Hart Lane was expected to be somewhat straightforward for Andre Villas-Boas’ men, who were looking to recover from defeat in their last Premier League match on home turf, when Chelsea had visited and secured a comfortable 4-2 victory.

Spurs had won their last Premier League game, away at Southampton, but did not give their home fans anything to cheer at White Hart Lane, with a poor performances which was compounded by a goal from Wigan midfielder Ben Watson ten minutes into the second half.

Tottenham were booed by their own fans and Friedel has conceded that the team did not live up to expectations.

"It was an awful day", the American was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"Every single one of us needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and hold our hands up.

Friedel was at fault for the goal and will be feeling the pressure with France number 1 Hugo Lloris breathing down his neck for the starting spot between the sticks.

Spurs boss Villas-Boas agreed with Friedel that the display had not been good enough, dubbing it arguably the worst of the entire campaign so far.

"It was maybe our worst performance of the season", he said.

"Wigan played better than us."
