Cristiano Ronaldo has defended criticism of his personality by saying in his opinion it is not a good thing to be humble.
The Portuguese star has often come under fire for what has been seen by some as arrogance, powered by an all encompassing belief that he is the best player on the planet.
This has been contrasted with Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who is seen as a more low-key superstar.
But for Ronaldo, the way he approaches the game and his personality is not something to apologise for – and he would not want to be humble.
"I am the way I am and I’m glad", the Real Madrid forward told France Football.
"Being humble is not good. In Portugal we say that too much humility is vanity.
relatedNewsStoryRonaldo did admit though that sometimes he is guilty of speaking before truly considering his words.
"Sometimes I say things that I do not really think.
"I get irritated with people writing about me without knowing me. It makes me sick and tired."
Ronaldo is currently in the running for the 2012 Ballon d’Or, although he has a real battle on his hands beating Messi to the accolade.
