Young Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract.

Liverpool have announced that the defender has put pen to paper on a "long-term" deal, which will see him continue his promising development at Anfield.

The 19-year-old has been handed first team opportunities under manager Brendan Rodgers this season and he has looked assured in his displays.

So far Wisdom has clocked up eight appearances in the Premier League, while he has also featured for the Reds four times in the Europa League.

And Wisdom is delighted that the club have placed their continued faith in him with a new deal.

"It’s a great honour to sign a new contract at the club and I’m very happy", he told Liverpool’s official site.

"It was an easy decision to make – as soon as they offered it to me, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands because it’s a great club and I just want to continue to play for Liverpool.

"I am happy with the progress I’ve made so far and hopefully I can progress more in the second half of the season and continue to keep playing.

"There’s still so much hard work ahead. There is big competition within the team and everyone wants to play football. I just hope I can keep progressing and continue in the way I have been."

Wisdom joined Liverpool in 2008 from Yorkshire side Bradford City, continuing his youth development with the Merseyside giants and being tipped for big things.

He made his debut at the start of this season, when Liverpool played Young Boys in the Europa League, a game he also scored in.
