Finnish star Teemu Tainio has returned back to his homeland to sign for HJK Helsinki.

The 33-year-old midfielder had been playing in the United States for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls, a side he joined in 2011 from Ajax.

Tainio started his professional career in Finland with FC Haka before being snapped up by French club Auxerre.

From there he was on the move to England, for a three-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur, as well as time at Sunderland and Birmingham City.

Tainio picked up 52 caps for Finland between 1998 and 2010, retiring from the international scene when he joined New York Red Bulls, with the long distance flights between the US and FInland his main reason.

It remains to be seen whether he will re-think this now that he has returned home.

Tainio has penned a two-year contract with HJK Helsinki.
