Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has explained that playing Liverpool is the fixture the Red Devils always look out for first, despite the fact that their Merseyside rivals have experienced a decline of sorts in recent years.

The two rivals lock horns tomorrow in a Premier League clash which is about very different things for each side.

Manchester United need the three points to keep a healthy lead at the top of the league standings as they aim to win the title, while Liverpool are looking to win to provide their hopes of pushing for the top four with a boost.

Even though each side’s objective for the season is different, Ferdinand insists the clash is as hard-fought as it has ever been.

"I would say it is the fixture we look forward to first", he told his club’s official site.

"The rivalry runs deep. Liverpool have not been up there fighting for the championship but the fans and the players are well versed in what this means to us as a club.

"I always enjoy playing against Liverpool, either at Anfield or Old Trafford. Hopefully this is another good, exciting and winning occasion for us.

"It is special [against Liverpool]. You look back over the years and see what has gone on before I came to the club.

"Whilst I have been here there have been loads of great moments. You just want to add your name and be a part of a team that adds to that long list of events that have gone on."

Manchester United won the earlier contest between the two at Anfield this season, claiming a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in an entertaining affair.
