Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk have pipped Chelsea to the signature of Brazilian midfielder Taison.

The Blues had recently been urged to make good on their interest in Taison by the player’s manager at Metalist Kharkiv, Miron Markevich, who explained there was a release clause of $20M in the midfielder’s contract.

But while Chelsea took their time, Shakhtar Donetsk raided their Ukrainian counterparts, paying Taison’s $20M clause and taking him to the Donbass Arena.

The Ukrainian champions admitted they had bid $15M at first for the 24-year-old, which has rejected by Metalist Kharkiv’s president.

With no compromise deal in sight, Shakhtar Donetsk opted to pay the full $20M, leaving Metalist Kharkiv powerless.

Taison has penned a five-year contract at the Donbass Arena.

Metalist Kharkiv had signed Taison from Brazilian outfit Internacional in 2010.

He made a big impression at the club, excelling both in the Ukrainian Premier League and the Europa League.
