Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained that the Gunners are now in a position to spend some serious money in the transfer market.

Wenger has promised to splash the cash in the current transfer window, but has so far kept his power dry, despite having funds at his disposal and a need to strengthen for the second half of the campaign.

But the Frenchman has sought to reassure the club’s fans that the money is there and Arsenal are, after many years of keeping a tight hold on the budget to help pay for the Emirates Stadium, in a position once again to make big money buys.

"We will have large spending", the French tactician told TV channel Al-Jazeera.

"Our finances were restricted because we had to pay for the stadium", he continued.

"Now we are again in a strong financial position, we can spend."

Arsenal do look to need a talent boost in their squad as they chase down a top four Champions League spot this season.

Currently Arsenal sit sixth in the Premier League, six points off the all-important fourth place.

With Manchester United and Manchester City appearing to have the top two positions secured, it seems a battle between Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton for the two remaining Champions League berths. Two teams will be disappointed.
