Manchester United have announced that midfielder Darren Fletcher is to miss the rest of the season.

Fletcher has undergone surgery to resolve a chronic bowel condition, which has interrupted his career several times already.

Now Manchester United hope that sending Fletcher for surgery will cure the problem.

"Darren Fletcher will be unavailable for the remainder of this season having undergone surgery to resolve his Ulcerative Colitis condition", the club announced on their official site.

"We wish to stress this was a planned procedure undertaken at the optimal time having achieved a period of sustained good general health, as illustrated by the fact that Darren has trained with the team regularly this season and been available for selection right up to the operation."

Fletcher has featured three times for Manchester United in the Premier League this season, while he also appeared in five of the club’s Champions League group games.

Under contract until 2015, the Scot remains a vital part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side and the veteran manager will hope he is fit and healthy for the 2013/14 campaign.
