Former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso believes that his old club should pull out all the stops to sign "champion" Kaka from Real Madrid.

Gattuso played with the Brazilian for the Rossoneri and saw him leave for Los Blancos in 2009.

However, Kaka’s spell in Spain has not worked out and Milan are working hard behind the scenes to bring him back to the San Siro.

Kaka has agreed to reduce his salary from €10M per year to €6M per year, leaving Milan and Real Madrid to agree the remainder of the deal, which is proving tricky.

But Gattuso thinks the Rossoneri must push hard for the playmaker.

"I personally, without thinking of the affection which binds me with a former team-mate, think that he could be a very important purchase for Milan", he said.

"We are talking about a champion who would still make a difference to Italian football and I would love to see him again with the Rossoneri."

Gattuso called time on his own long association with Milan last summer, choosing to head for an Indian summer at Swiss Super League outfit Sion.

The Italian has been impressive in Switzerland and Sion remain in the title running with 18 games played so far.

The Super League is currently on a winter break until 9th February.
