Napoli look set to beat QPR to the signature of Portuguese defender Rolando.

QPR had an offer for Rolando accepted by FC Porto yesterday and the stage was set for Harry Redknapp to convince the 27-year-old to move to Loftus Road to help in the club’s battle against relegation.

But Rolando has continued to prefer a move to Italy and Napoli..

Now, according to Tutto Mercato, the player is due in Italy to put the finishing touches to a deal to sign for the Azzurri.

Porto preferred to sell Rolando outright to QPR, who had made a cash offer.

Napoli’s bid is in the form of a loan until the end of the season with an option to then make that permanent.

The Serie A giants sent an emissary to Portugal last night to close the deal and put Napoli ahead of QPR which, with the player’s blessing, they appear to have done.

Losing out on Rolando would be a blow for QPR, with boss Harry Redknapp having travelled to Portugal personally recently in an attempt to push the move through.
