QPR have confirmed the signing of defender Christopher Samba from Anzhi Makhachkala.

Samba has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract at Loftus Road and the former Blackburn Rovers man has been handed the number five shirt.

The signing of Samba is a coup, with QPR activating his release clause at Anzhi Makhachkala and leaving the wealthy Russian Premier League side powerless to resist his departure.

QPR desperately needed to sign another defender after parting with Anton Ferdinand (on loan to Bursaspor) and Ryan Nelsen (taking over as coach of Toronto FC).

Rs boss Harry Redknapp is delighted with the capture, calling it "unbelievable", as his side battle relegation.

"This is an unbelievable signing", Redknapp told his club's official site.

"Tony Fernandes [QPR owner] deserves a lot of credit for this one."
