Schalke coach Jens Keller has told his side to forget about Champions League football next season if they do not rapidly up their game.

The Ruhr giants went down to a shock 2-1 defeat at home against basement dwellers Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga yesterday, a result which was undoubtedly the surprise of the weekend.

Keller, who succeeded Huub Stevens at the club, now knows that Schalke are at real risk of not being in the Champions League next season.

"We had great plans, but we knew it would be a tough game", he explained to the press.

"After a defeat like this, we can’t even dare to think about playing Champions League football next season.

"First, we have to produce a good game of football.

"I think that you can understand that we are very disappointed."

The defeat leaves Schalke sitting sixth in the Bundesliga and seven points off the all-important fourth spot, which is currently occupied by Eintracht Frankfurt.

Next up for Schalke is a fearsome test, with a trip to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena next weekend.
