Former Sunderland striker Louis Saha is heading to Lazio as a replacement for the injured Miroslav Klose.

Saha has confirmed that he is on his way to the Italian capital, where he is expected to have a medical with Lazio and discuss personal terms. The 34-year-old can move outside the transfer window system because he is a free agent.

The Frenchman joined Sunderland last summer, but saw his contract terminated by the Black Cats last month.

A free agent, the veteran striker has attracted substantial interest, with clubs from the Middle East and the MLS being linked with a move for his services.

But it now looks to be Lazio at which Saha will resume his career.

The Serie A side recently suffered a blow with the news that prolific German striker Miroslav Klose will be out for up to two months through injury.

For Vladimir Petkovic’s Champions League-spot-chasing team, another forward option is now needed.

And it seems Saha will fit the bill, if loose ends can be tied up.

The striker has only played in his native France and England, with his most notable spell coming at Manchester United between 2004 and 2008.
