Former Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo is believed to be a contender to take over at Bundesliga outfit Schalke for next season.

According to Sport Mediaset, Di Matteo is under consideration in the corridors of power at Gelsenkirchen, as Schalke ponder replacing Jens Keller in the summer.

Schalke are struggling to hit top gear this season and recently went down to a surprise home defeat against Bundesliga basement dwellers Greuther Furth.

Now there is the serious possibility that the Ruhr giants will miss next season’s Champions League, in what would be a severe blow to the club.

Di Matteo is a free agent following his sacking by Chelsea last year.

The Italian impressed many Bundesliga clubs with leading Chelsea to the Champions League last season, beating Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena to lift the trophy.

Bouncing back into management with Schalke would surely be a tempting prospect for Di Matteo, as he looks to shrug off his sacking by Chelsea.

The former midfielder has never coached outside England however, with his only spells in the dugout coming at Stamford Bridge, with West Brom and at MK Dons.
