Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush believes that Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale must think long and hard before deciding to leave the English Premier League.

Bale’s continued good form for Spurs has seen him linked with several foreign giants, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.

However, another Wales international, in the form of Rush, thinks that heading abroad is not always the route to happiness and has pointed to his own experience of a move.

Rush headed for Juventus in 1987, at which time he was one of the most feared strikers in English football with Liverpool.

But the switch did not work out, leaving Rush unhappy and moving back to Liverpool in 1988.

And he has warned Bale.

"It’s got to be something he’s happy with", Rush told the BBC.

"You will learn when you go abroad, but would he be happy?

"If you’re not happy you won’t produce your best football. He’s happy what he’s doing [at Spurs] and that’s what it’s all about."

Spurs look on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League, which has been seen as a pre-requisite to keeping Bale at the club.

At the weekend, Bale bagged his ninth goal in 12 matches for Spurs as they defeated Newcastle 2-1 at White Hart Lane, to stay firmly in control of their top four Premier League destiny.
