Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has blasted the referee in last night’s Europa League match between his side and Tottenham Hotspur, claiming that a blatant penalty for Bafetimbi Gomis was not given.

Les Gones slipped to a 2-1 first leg defeat against the Premier League outfit, after Gareth Bale scored a brace of superb free kicks to hand Spurs an advantage to travel with to France next week.

Aulas feels that his side played well however and only had words of criticism for the Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca.

"There were a lot of good things. We marked well and kept things tight. It was the right thing to do", Aulas told French sports daily L’Equipe.

"I think, without making a link between the Portuguese referee and the nationality of the Tottenham coach, there was a blatant penalty on Gomis."

And the Lyon supremo is confident about his side’s chances in the second leg, as they seek to qualify for the next round of the Europa League.

"We have our chances for the return leg", he said.
