Schalke are lining up a sensational move for Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes, according to German daily Bild.

The Gelsenkirchen giants parted company with Huub Stevens earlier this season, while current boss Jens Keller has not significantly improved results.

Now Schalke are planning for the future and Heynckes is an option under serious consideration.

The 67-year-old is working wonders at Bayern Munich and last season was only denied a hat-trick of trophies by Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and German Cup and Chelsea in the Champions League.

This season Bayern Munich top the Bundesliga and are due to face Arsenal in the Champions League Round of 16, while they play Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-final of the German Cup.

Nevertheless, Bayern Munich have secured former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola on a three-year deal to start in the summer, meaning Heynckes is making way.

The veteran coach has been widely expected to retire, but the chance to work at Schalke may be too good to turn down.

Heynckes has coached Schalke before, in the 2003/04 campaign; his contract was ended in the summer of 2004.
