Former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender Jurgen Kohler has accepted an offer to become the sporting director of Regionalliga Sudwest side SV Waldhof Mannheim, after they sacked Gunter Seibert last Tuesday

Kohler made exactly 500 league appearances during his time as a player, enjoying stints at various clubs including Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Koln and Juventus. But the former German international started his career at Waldhof, something Kohler is now acknowledging by returning.

“This is a labour of love”, Kohler was quoted as saying in the Hamburg Morning Post.

“Waldhof has helped me in my career a lot. Other clubs would not have given me the same opportunity.”

Kohler is now planning to create a winning team for the fourth-tier club, one that “represents the attributes of Waldhof” and hopefully achieve promotion next season.

“I hope that I can open doors for the club”, Kohler said.

Waldhof are currently in eighth place in the Regionalliga Sudwest table, six points adrift of the promotion playoff spots with 11 games to go.
