Former Northern Ireland and Manchester United player Norman Whiteside has explained that Red Devils defender Jonny Evans has become stronger with the passing of time at the club.

Evans, also a Northern Ireland international, started his youth career with the Old Trafford side in 2004, and made his senior debut with the club on 26th September, 2007. He appeared 156 times under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, scoring five times.

The 25-year-old has also lifted three Premier League trophies with the Manchester giants.

"Jonny has done brilliantly", Whiteside told Manchester United’s official site.

"I think it’s his third Premier League title and he’s got stronger and stronger.”

Whiteside, who also started his youth career with the club in 1978, and played with the senior side between 1982 and 1989, also believes that Evans has all it takes to captain his national side.

“I’m sure he will be captain of Northern Ireland before too long.

"Because he’d be one of the best players, I would have thought he would be captain already. I’ve not yet seen him wear the armband though”, he added.

Evans has earned 31 caps for Northern Ireland. He played his last international game against Israel in March this year.

The Green and White Army, under head coach Michael O’Neill, go head-to-head with Russia in a World Cup qualifier at Winsdor Park, Belfast, on 14th August.
