Gareth Bale’s potential move to Real Madrid has been setting tongues wagging in recent months, but the financial impact has been dubbed wasteful by former Premier League star Cesc Fabregas.

With Tottenham failing to meet the Champions League grade, Real Madrid are poised to tempt the Welshman away to Spain, with €100m being quoted within many circles.

It could be argued that Bale, also chased by Paris Saint-Germain, almost singlehandedly pushed Tottenham towards fifth place this season, with his 21 goals in 33 league games.

However, Fabregas, who spent eight years at Arsenal before moving to boyhood club Barcelona, is wary of whether transfer fees necessarily translate to titles.

"One hundred million euros for Bale is, I think, a lot", Fabregas told AS. "I do not know who can make that kind of money.

"[Bale] is a good player in good physical condition. But we will have to see if the money can have an impact on Madrid and their performance."

And on the question of transfers, much has been made of a potential return to the Premier League for Fabregas, with his former club and Manchester United both linked.

However, the 26-year-old, who made 32 appearances for Barcelona and scored 11 times to help the title-winning cause, once again brushed aside any rumours.

"There are people who talk a lot and the truth is that no one has spoken to me", he added.

"I want to win at Barcelona, which is my home and where I always dreamed of playing and I’ll try to get through."
