Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has claimed that Manchester City are not prepared to pay Edinson Cavani’s release clause, despite wanting to sign the striker.

De Laurentiis knows that the Uruguayan hitman is wanted by Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City, and is sticking stubbornly to the player’s €63m release clause being activated for him to leave the south of Italy.

And speaking at a press conference to unveil Rafael Benitez as the club’s new head coach, De Laurentiis took time out to address the Cavani situation and Manchester City’s unwillingness to play ball.

"Manchester City don’t have enough money to buy Cavani because they have indicated that they will not pay the amount that is required", he said.

"City’s Abu Dhabi owners have said they will never pay €63m for Cavani."

And De Laurentiis, who added that he feels a top draw club, such as Bayern Munich or Real Madrid might be able to persuade Cavani to quit the San Paolo, nevertheless insisted there is nothing new to report on his situation.

"There isn’t any new news about Edinson", he explained.

"Newspapers are saying that he wants to leave, but that isn’t quite right."

Cavani hit the back of the net 29 times in Serie A last season as Napoli finished second behind Juventus.
