Tahiti head coach Eddy Etaeta has admitted that despite all efforts to avoid another heavy defeat in the FIFA Confederations Cup, his side just could not stop Uruguay’s attacking play last night.
Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay handed an 8-0 drubbing to Tahiti – who have been making their debut in a senior FIFA tournament in the competition.
Team Fenua were already knocked out of the tournament after the nightmarish 10-0 defeat against world champions Spain. They now sit at the bottom of Group B, with a negative goal difference of 23.
“Obviously we didn’t want to suffer another defeat like that, but unfortunately we couldn’t find a way to stop Uruguay’s attacking play”, Etaeta told FIFA.com.

“This kind of game shows the gigantic difference between professional and amateur football – it’s an abyss!”
“The tournament’s over for us, but we leave here having learned a lot of lessons. In spite of the defeats and the emphatic scorelines, we’re going to keep on playing and trying to improve, little by little”, he added.
As things stand, Spain and Uruguay progress to the knockout stages of the competition from Group B, whereas Brazil and Italy progress from Group A.
The Selecao face Tabarez’s side in the first semi-final of the tournament on Wednesday at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte.
Chelsea and Spain forward Fernando Torres in currently the top scorer in the tournament, with five goals.
