Hamburg may be close to sealing the deal for Arsenal’s Johan Djourou, but are no closer to a move for another former Premier League star in Roque Santa Cruz, with the striker’s decision still being awaited.

Djourou today underwent his medical with Hamburg, and a confirmation of his loan spell is imminent following several weeks of competition from Bundesliga rivals Hannover.

However, another priority signing in Santa Cruz remains elusive with Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer admitting the Paraguayan was yet to signal his intentions.

Kreuzer had previously also stated there was little else Hamburg could do to convince Santa Cruz alongside an offer for the player who scored 12 goals last season on loan at Malaga, but who is a free agent.

And Kreuzer was today quoted by Kicker as saying: "He is a player we desire. But we are waiting for Roque’s decision, as he has priority. I do not have a problem waiting a few days."

As Hamburg’s players met up for pre-season training today, former Premier League star Rafael van der Vaart also reiterated his desire to see Santa Cruz in his team next season.

Van der Vaart has seen Santa Cruz in action within close quarters when the pair were at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City respectively, and is well aware of the Paraguayan’s talents.

And the Dutchman believes Santa Cruz will be the perfect addition for a club that has failed to achieve European competition in the last few seasons.

"Last year everyone dreamed of [Europe]", Van der Vaart added. "Now we can aim for it as a club to play there. Anything else is not worth it.

"For that we need quality, and Roque would be great as it would make things easier."
