Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp admitted it would have been wrong to see Steve McClaren’s expertise as coach go to waste, as the former England boss became a coach with the Rs.

McClaren yesterday joined QPR as a coach under Redknapp – on a short-term deal – and with the club facing a daunting promotion challenge, the manager is only too happy with the extra help.

McClaren, after all, boasts experience from clubs not only in England, but also in Holland where he led FC Twente to the league title in 2010.

He also managed Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, before taking on roles at Nottingham Forest, followed by his second Twente stint that saw an ignominious exit midway through the season.

The former Middlesbrough boss is understood to be on a three-month contract, and Redknapp told QPR’s official site: "He is out of work and that was a waste really so I asked him to come in.

"The more coaches we have got the more we can take individuals away and work individually with them and improve their technique and their understanding of the game.

"I met Steve a couple of weeks ago and we were sat down talking about football. I was asking him about his time in Holland when he won the championship there and then he went to Germany.

"We talked about coaching methods and how we have to start to look to improve the way we play in this country."

The pair will be tasked with gaining promotion at the first time of asking, with Redknapp staying on at Loftus Road despite reports that he would leave following their relegation.

And the ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss has nothing else on his mind at present, adding: "I have really got to get QPR up this year so that is where I am at.

"We have got a big chance. If we don’t make it this season then I wouldn’t be happy with what I have done."
