New Swansea City signing Jonjo Shelvey has explained that he is keen on enjoying his football with the Welsh club, and is also looking forward to appearing in as many games as possible.

The 21-year-old was snapped up by the Swans from Liverpool yesterday, and the midfielder penned a four-year deal at the Liberty Stadium. The fee agreed between the clubs was £5m, which could rise with potential add-ons.

The former Arsenal youth player also insisted that his manager at Liverpool, Brendan Rodgers, also backed him in joining Swansea.

“Brendan said he wouldn’t let me go to a club that wasn’t right for me. He said Swansea are perfect for me with the way I play”, Shelvey told his new club’s official site.

“He couldn’t guarantee me the first-team football at Liverpool, and he said if I could get the game-time at Swansea then I should definitely go.

“I could have stayed at Liverpool and fight for my place because they didn’t want to get rid of me, but I felt, in the end, I needed to come and make a name for myself. Rather than sit on the bench every week at Liverpool, I need to come and play football and get myself to the status that I once had.”

The England Under-21 international signed for the Reds in May 2010, following a switch from his boyhood club Charlton Athletic. He clocked up 32 appearances under Rodgers last season, scoring five times.

Shelvey also feels that making the switch to the Welsh club will help him in many ways, and believes that the experience of having worked under Rodgers last season will help him adapt well with Swansea.

“Moving here will help me in terms of the way the manager wants to play. Obviously having worked under Brendan that will stand me in good stead.

“I just want to enjoy my football, get as many games under my belt as possible and hopefully win something with Swansea”, he added.
