Sunderland’s summer spree shows no sign of stopping, with Paolo Di Canio poised over the signing of Greece international midfielder Charis Mavrias from Panathinaikos, according to the Athens News Agency.
The Black Cats were understood to have tabled a €2m offer for Mavrias two weeks ago, which was rejected, but are now ready to bring the 19-year-old to England on a reported €3m deal.
Panathinaikos have revealed that a verbal agreement is in place for Mavrias, who was under contract with the Greek giants until 2016.
If the deal does go through, Mavrias will become Sunderland’s seventh full signing of this summer, the fifth from an overseas club.

Mavrias joined Panathinaikos in 2010 and has managed 69 appearances for the Greek Super League club, who finished outside the European places last season.
Sunderland yesterday wrapped up the signing of Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone, who put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
This week has also seen three arrivals on free transfers, that of Cabral, Valentin Roberge and Modibo Diakite, with Di Canio also aiming to complete a deal for Le Havre defender Benjamin Mendy soon.
