FC Twente defender Douglas could see his chances of securing a move to one of four clubs scuppered by an administrative oversight, after failing to notify his club about his desires.

Douglas’ contract with the Eredivisie club was set to expire on 1st July, and by all accounts he was expected to be a free agent, with his representative noting that several offers from abroad were on the table.

However, it appears the centre-back was required to inform Twente of his desire to leave, a request made by the club as early as 15th May.

And with no such intimation received by Twente, it is understood that Douglas’ contract has been automatically extended by a year.

The biggest implication is that any club wishing to take Douglas will have to pay Twente, while the player has reportedly already refused an offer from Hannover, who were offering to pay him a salary of €1.4m a year.

The Dutchman had been keen on trying a new challenge after six years with Twente where he played 243 games and scored 16 goals, with a league title and cup win added on.

Last week, Douglas’ agent had revealed the player was sitting on offers from four different countries – England, Germany, Turkey and Russia.

Russian side Kuban Krasnodar are understood to be one of those clubs, while the 25-year-old had been previously chased by Inter Milan, Reading and Anzhi Makhachkala.
