Hamburg are close to agreeing a contract extension with in-demand defensive starlet Jonathan Tah, the club's sporting director has revealed.

The youngster has attracted the eyes of a number of Europe's elite; Hamburg have admitted that they know Tah is popular with English Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.

But the Bundesliga club are confident Tah will agree to stay, albeit with a large release clause inserted into the contract which could leave the door open for a big-money switch if he continues his impressive development.

Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer told Kicker: "We are very, very far advanced with the talks.

"I think we may conclude such an extension before the new year."

The 17-year-old's new contract is thought set to run until the summer of 2018 and for Hamburg will remove the constant worry of losing one of their brightest prospects.

Tah has so far clocked up eight Bundesliga appearances this season as he has been introduced into the club's first team.
