Villarreal's strong start to their top-flight return has prompted fresh honour for coach Marcelino who was rewarded with a two-year contract extension.

Former Valencia and Real Zaragoza manager Marcelino was appointed in January this year and led Villarreal to promotion to La Liga as runners-up.

The good run has continued this season as Villarreal are in fourth place currently.

And that has not gone unnoticed with Marcelino set to stay on with the Yellow Submarine until June 2016.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig was quoted by UEFA.com as saying: "He's been getting great results which are plain for everyone to see. He understands the philosophy and the way to work here."

Marcelino, who previously also managed Racing Santander and Recreativo de Huelva, has managed to engineer many a surprising result for Villarreal this season.

Villarreal pulled off a 4-1 win over Marcelino's ex-club Valencia last month, while they also boast 2-2 and 1-1 draws against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid respectively.
