Former Roma president Rosella Sensi has revealed that she was close to signing up Rafael Benitez to coach the Serie A outfit.

Sensi served as the club's president between 2008 and 2011, a period which saw Benitez enjoy spells at Liverpool and Inter; he left the Nerazzurri in December 2010 shortly after winning the FIFA Club World Cup.

And Roma could have been another stop on the Spaniard's list of jobs, with Sensi seeing the current Napoli coach strongly recommended to her.

Sensi told Radio Kiss Kiss: "Benitez was close to Roma when I was president.

"Someone who worked with me had thought of Rafa Benitez, but the Spanish coach did not come for a variety of reasons."

Benitez is currently enjoying his second spell in Italian football with Napoli.

The Champions League-winning manager currently has the Azzurri sitting third in the standings, three points off second-placed Juventus and four behind league leaders Roma.
