Reigning English champions Manchester United are looking to send a message to their Premier League rivals in the January transfer window by planning a move for Real Madrid's Angel di Maria.

Di Maria has been in commendable form for Los Blancos this season, having scored three goals and provided six assists in 16 matches overall so far.

Such a capable provider would be welcome in the current Manchester United line-up, with manager David Moyes having had a mediocre start to his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

According to Spanish daily El Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United are believed to be willing to part ways with a hefty sum of €21m to reel in Di Maria from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Such a sum, considerable as it sounds, may not be enough to force Real Madrid's hand, however. Indeed, Di Maria's release clause stands at roughly €50m – a value more than double the amount the Red Devils are willing to offer.

The Argentine winger's contract with the Spanish giants will not expire until 2018.
