Barcelona could see Victor Valdes ruled out for a month after the goalkeeper suffered a hamstring injury on Spain duty yesterday.

Valdes was taken off in the second half of Spain's 1-0 defeat to South Africa, and according to AS, the Barcelona man will undergo further screening today.

It is feared the injury could be long term, after Valdes was seen boarding Spain's flight home in crutches.

Pepe Reina, who took on the gloves in place of Valdes, later said: "The most important thing is the status of Victor Valdes and not the defeat.

"Victor will have a check-up and hopefully it will not be serious. The most important thing is to be well and not that we lost the game."

La Roja were undoubted favourites for yesterday's friendly, given that the majority of their team had been World Cup winners at the Soccer City stadium three years ago.

However, Bernard Parker scored from a delightful chip on 56 minutes – deemed slightly contentious due to a hook away from behind the line – to end Spain's six-game unbeaten run.
