Hamburg left-back Marcell Jansen insists Germany could have run out more comfortable winners last night against England than the 1-0 final score suggests.

Germany made several changes to their line-up from the team that drew 1-1 against Italy, and many had tipped England as slight favourites.

Per Mertesacker had other ideas though and only Joe Hart's saves prevented Germany from scoring more goals.

"We had chances to score the second goal but we didn’t and it was close right up until the end", Jansen told Bundesliga.com.

"I think England didn’t quite get their final pass right, but we defended very well too.

"We were able to counter-attack in the second half and we had a lot of chances to score the second goal, which we didn’t take, and that made it harder.

"Both games were different and we should have scored the second goal in each of them. We were very well prepared for each opponent and we’re happy with how these two matches have gone."

Jansen earned his 44th cap for Germany last night, but is not taking his place in next year's plane to Brazil for granted.

"We have a lot of good players in the squad and everyone wants to play, which is really positive as it drives us all on to play better", he added. "That type of competition is only normal at this level."
