Gary Pallister believes that Manchester United boss David Moyes is still searching for his best central defensive partnership.

Moyes has a number of options at centre-back, with veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic joining Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling as potential picks.

But Pallister, who formed a legendary centre-back partnership with Steve Bruce at Old Trafford in the 1990s, feels Moyes will be picking quality whatever choice he makes.

He told the club's official site: "David Moyes is still trying to find out which is his best partnership.

"Rio and Vida started the season and we conceded some bad goals, which was not always down to those two in particular. The team as a whole has got to defend.

"Rio has been out of the firing line a little bit and Nemanja has come in and out. I think Rio will be handled in the same way as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Nemanja had a serious injury and won't play every game.

"But Moyes has got great players like Smalling, Jones and Evans, who I think was outstanding last year and I feel he has a shout to be a permanent fixture."

The Red Devils, who sit in fifth place, have conceded 13 goals in eleven Premier League games so far this season, more than any other side in the top eight.
