Jan Vertonghen has explained that Belgium coach Marc Wilmots sees him as a left-back, despite his insistence that he is a centre-back.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender turned out as a centre-back at former club Ajax and expected to play the same role at White Hart Lane.

But Spurs soon noticed that Vertonghen could be deployed as left-back when needed and the Belgian has regularly featured in that role.

And he is now pigeonholed into that role at international level too with his country.

"Red Devils coach Marc Wilmots just sees me as a left-back", Vertonghen told Sporting Telenet.

"[Vincent] Kompany, [Thomas] Vermaelen, [Daniel] Van Buyten and [Toby] Alderweireld are all before me in the pecking order", he continued.

"I understand it because I have not done too badly in the left-back position."
