Veteran Brazilian goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni has surpassed Pele's appearance record.

The custodian played in his 1,117th match for Sao Paulo against Botafogo, beating Pele's record of 1,116 matches during an 18-year spell with Santos.

 


Ceni joined the ranks at Sao Paulo in 1990 and has remained at the club ever since, picking up a whole host of trophies including three Brazilian league titles, two Copa Libertadores crowns and one FIFA Club World Cup.

At international level he also picked up the 2002 World Cup with Brazil.

The 40-year-old has also scored a remarkable 113 goals over the duration of his club career.

Ceni won the first of 17 caps for Brazil in 1997, eventually bowing out of international action in 2006.
