Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has told his side to tighten up at the back following their 4-2 victory over Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League.

The Citizens were pushed hard by Plzen at the Etihad Stadium, with the Czech side twice equalising before goals from Alvaro Negredo (78th minute) and Edin Dzeko (89th minute) finally put the visitors to the sword.

Manchester City have already qualified for the Round of 16 and with an eye on the latter stages Pellegrini explained he wants his defence to concentrate on not handing the opposition chances to score.

"I’m satisfied because we won the game but we didn’t play well, we didn’t play with intensity", he said via his club's site.

"I think that we can attack and we can score four goals without giving the other team so many chances.

"One of the most important things to being an attacking team is knowing how to defend and I think on that front, we did very bad tonight."

But the Chilean tactician was keen to reserve warm words for Plzen, who he felt performed well, building on their earlier display against Bayern Munich.

"Plzen played a very good game tonight – I watched them against Bayern the other week and I was very impressed with their performance against such a strong team."
