Cruzeiro have played down interest from Manchester United in midfielder Everton Ribeiro, explaining that there are no bids on the table for the player, simply speculation.

Ribeiro has been strongly linked with the Red Devils, having admitted playing for the English champions would be something of a dream. And Cruzeiro sporting director Aleandre Mattos feels things have snowballed from there.

Mattos explained to Globo Esporte: "There is no bid, just speculation.

"Everton Ribeiro said that he dreams of playing for Manchester United and then people started talking about how he will cost €8m – it makes no sense.

"We rejected a bid of €10m for our ownership interest in him in the middle of this season.

"Cruzeiro will not let the player go."

Ribeiro helped Cruzeiro to collect this year's Brazilian Serie A title and remains highly prized by the club.

However, the January transfer window will surely present a window of opportunity for suitors to test the Brazilian outfit's determination to keep the midfielder.
