Liverpool could be gearing up for a winter move for Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand after manager Brendan Rodgers expressed his admiration for the left-back's "terrific career".

Rodgers, of course, knows Bertrand better than most coaches, having trained him as part of Chelsea's youth development set-up.

The 24-year-old has risen to England levels and last season made 19 Premier League appearances for Chelsea's first team, though he has only played once this time.

Liverpool would do well to reinforce their defensive lines ahead of the busy Christmas period, and though Rodgers declined to comment on other winter targets, Bertrand was the exception.

"I never talk about any players of an opposing club," Rodgers told a press conference.

"The gossip and speculation around the football club both on and off the field is immense. I'll be sat here all day.

"I can only talk about Ryan because I know him very, very well. As a young man, as a young lad we worked with him at Chelsea.

"We brought him in from Gillingham, so he's had a terrific career. But that aside I wouldn't speak on any other players who have been linked, otherwise I'll be here all night."
