Former Manchester United defender Denis Irwin feels that Ryan Giggs record of 13 Premier League titles is a total which will not be broken, with his appearance record also unlikely to be bettered.

Giggs is 40 years old today, but still plying his trade at Manchester United and is a vital cog in new manager David Moyes' machine.

The Welshman's appearance against Bayer Leverkusen in Manchester United's 5-0 Champions League win on Wednesday was number 953, a mind-boggling total, with Giggs now setting his sights on hitting 1,000 games.

And Irwin, who himself spent 12 years at Old Trafford with Giggs, is full of admiration for the 40-year-old.

"That volume of medals will never be broken", he said to FIFA.

"The number of games? That would take some beating as well.

"What he has done is unbelievable. That kind of longevity at such a top club.

"This is no run-of-the-mill, mid-table team or one in the Championship. You are talking the very highest level for the last 23 years.

"The amount of games. The number of trophies. The dedication needed to go the distance and challenge yourself every year. To come back for pre-season training and keep going with the same intensity shows what type of player and person he is."
