Switzerland are looking to land current Lazio coach Vladimir Petkovic as their new national boss once the 2014 World Cup is out of the way.

According to Tutto Mercato, Petkovic will see out his contract at Lazio next summer and will link up with the Swiss national team.

Ottmar Hitzfeld is due to step down from the role after the World Cup, as was announced last month, and Petkovic is deemed the favourite to replace him.

It is believed that negotiations with the Swiss FA are already under way and that a formal decision will arrive within the next few days.

The Swiss FA has been in meetings with organisations in the country about a possible successor, with Petkovic high on the list.

If confirmed, Petkovic will have beaten off competition from ex-Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo and former Tottenham manager Christian Gross to the posting.

Petkovic has been at the Lazio helm since 2012, after his experiences in Switzerland and Turkey.

The 50-year-old has previously managed FC Sion and BSC Young Boys, among others in Switzerland, while he also spent time leading Samsunspor.

Under his guidance, Lazio reached a credible quarter-final finish in last season's Europa League while they clinched the Coppa Italia by beating arch-rivals Roma in the final.
