Aston Villa’s Karim El Ahmadi has backed his team-mate and fellow midfielder Fabian Delph for a place in the England squad.

Delph has put in a number of impressive performances for Villa this season, scoring twice and proving an assist.

And El Ahmadi has heaped praise on Delph and insisted that the 24-year-old has been the best player for Aston Villa in the present campaign.

The Morocco international also feels that Delph’s impressive outings this term should result in the former Leeds United player being called up by the England manager.

"When I first joined and trained, I could quickly tell that Fabian was one of the best players in the group”, El Ahmadi explained to his club’s official site.

"He's been the best player this season in my opinion. He has been very good in most games. He has been very consistent.

“If Fabian keeps going like this, I think he would deserve a chance in the England squad.

"I know I'm not the England coach – and it's my own personal opinion – but Fabian is as good as the other lads playing for England.

"I think he deserves the chance to show what he can do. That's my opinion."

Delph, whose contract with Aston Villa runs until 2015, has made 87 appearances in all competitions for the Villains, scoring four times.

He is yet to earn a senior cap for England but has represented the nation at Under-19 and Under-21 levels.
