The owner of Serie A side Cagliari is eyeing buying a 75% stake in Championship side Leeds United.

Massimo Cellino is reported to have been at the Yorkshire club's training ground in recent days and now, according to the BBC, is closing on doing a deal.

Another consortium have been in the running to invest into Leeds, that involving managing director David Haigh, but their bid looks to have fallen apart due to a lack of funds.

Should Cellino succeed in buying a majority stake, the future of manager Brian McDermott is believed to be in doubt.

The Italian is thought to favour appointing ex-Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa as coach, and McDermott has admitted he cannot say whether the weekend match against Huddersfield will be his last in charge.

"I've got no idea if I'll be here after Saturday's match. In football any game could be your last match so you have to make the most of it, especially at a club like Leeds United", he said.
