Hamburg coach Bert van Marwijk's job is deemed safe by no less than the club's board despite the team being favourites for the drop.

Hamburg have been in the bottom half of the table since after matchday one, and are now facing relegation.

Fans have not made secret their desire for a change, even though Van Marwijk made clear he would not resign even after Saturday's 3-0 loss to Hertha Berlin.

The task is not made simpler with a midweek cup clash against Bayern Munich to come, but the club's board held extensive meetings after the Hertha loss to analyse Van Marwijk's position.

And CEO Carl Jarchow later told a press conference: "We have taken the decision to continue with Bert van Marwijk.

"The board came together after the game [on Saturday] and analysed the current situation.

"Here are the three major issues that were at the centre: Has the coach achieved with the team yet? Is he determined enough? Does he have a plan?

"We have answered all three questions with a resounding yes."

Following the Hertha game, which was their sixth-straight loss, Van Marwijk had been quoted as saying: "I take full responsibility. But I will not resign.

"I remain positive and one hundred percent convinced that we will not get relegated."
