Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has insisted that he won't risk captain Ron Vlaar for the game against Cardiff City if the defender is not 100% match fit.

The Claret and Blue have lost their two previous Premier League outings, against Everton and West Ham respectively slippping down two places to 12th spot.

The match against Cardiff this evening will therefore be an important one as Lambert's men look to get their season back on track. Lambert would be delighted to have Vlaar back, with the Dutchman having made 19 appearances for the team in the Premier League this season.

Speaking about the Dutchman's availability, Lambert said to his club's official site: "I can't risk him. He has to be comfortable. But if he thinks he can play, we will look at it.

"His absence affects things because of the balance. We have two left footers playing at centre-half which is not ideal.

"The two boys do great every time I ask them to go and do it. If they make mistakes, they are honest mistakes.

"But Ron gives you the balance – that's the big thing."
