Brazil legend Rivaldo has announced his retirement from all forms of football at the age of 41.

The 1999 FIFA World Player of the Year has been playing for Brazilian third division side Mogi Mirim with his son Rivaldinho, aged 18. He is also currently working as the president of the club.

Having started his career in 1991, Rivaldo went on to earn 74 caps for the Brazilian national team between 1993 and 2003.

"My history as a player has come to the end", Rivaldo said via Instagram.

Rivaldo thanked everyone associated with him along with the fans for their continued support, helping him survive in professional football for 24 long years.

"With tears in my eyes today I would like to thank God, my family and all the support, the affection that I received during those 24 years as a player.

"I have to thank the lovely career I have built over these years. There were many obstacles, challenges, waivers, longings, disappointments, but there were much greater joys, achievements, growth, change", the statement said.

He enjoyed a successful spell at AC Milan having helped the Rossoneri win the Coppa Italia and Champions League during his first season with the club.

Besides a successful club career, the versatile playmaker also helped his national team win the 1999 Copa America and the World Cup three years later.
