West Ham United winger Stewart Downing has stressed that the Hammers need to garner as many points as possible in the last seven games to avoid any chance of getting dragged back in the relegation dogfight.

West Ham, who are on 34 points, are eight points ahead of 18th-placed Cardiff City. Sam Allardyce's men are six points off the 40-point mark, which is seen as the benchmark for safety, but Downing is not ready to think along those lines and insists that the east London side should target as many points as possible.

Downing told his club’s official site: "You'd like to think one more win would be enough, but it's been a strange old league this season – we won four, then lost three – and teams are beating each other.”

Downing on the other hand thinks that the Hammers should try to win as many games as possible so that they can negate any chance of the relegation battlers catching up with them.

“We just need to get as many wins on the board and keep the momentum going by winning and winning.

“We can't think one more win will be enough because then we could get dragged back in again."
