Incoming Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino has wielded the axe at his other club, Serie A side Cagliari, sacking coach Diego Lopez.

The writing was on the wall for Lopez last night as Cellino began considering whether to sack the coach following Cagliari's 3-1 home defeat to Roma.

Cagliari's form over the last six games is the second worst in Serie A and the club now lie just seven points above the drop zone.

And Cagliari explained why they felt they needed to act.

"Cagliari Calcio announce the dismissal of coach Diego Lopez", the club said in a statement.

"The need to give this team better direction until the end of the season in order to meet the objective of survival make necessary a change on the bench of the first team.

"This decision is extremely painful as Lopez has always presented himself as a professional man, and in the past has flown the flag as club captain.

"The club would like to thank the coach for his work and offer him our heartfelt best wishes for the rest of his career."
